Koa Vase 01

This mind-boggling example of Òtiger-stripeÓ koa was a turnerÕs nightmare. Partially rotted, the soft punky wood had to be frozen in place with exoxy resin before finish-turning could be approached. How could one ever throw out such a magnificent piece of wood? The technique worked; this vase was the first time I had tried it.The piece is completely hollowed out and is very light in weight. The vase was sanded to a polished finish, primed with 3 coats of tung oil, and sprayed with 4 coats of polyurethane varnish, which was then rubbed out to a perfectly-level, eggshell luster. This is my ÒLevel-5Ó finish. The quoted price is approximate; wood like this just does not grow on trees.
