This showpiece came from a tree in Kilauea on KauaiÕs Northshore which I slabbed in 1983. Out of ignorance I stored the wood badly, and in a very short time it was semi-rotten and ridden with termites and woodborers. I hung on to it and it 1995 began cutting it up and turning it. Imagine my surprise when in the midst of all this seeming devastation a miracle of color revealed itself! The cream-colored wood had spalted: rot fungi had attacked, and their waste products had colored the wood riotously. I soon learned that mango will show pinks, yellows, oranges, greens, purples, greys and blacks in splashes like a Monet. This example shows a pronounced Òfeather-crotchÓ grain, formed where the two main branches fork from the trunk. Finished with 6 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer.
